DOZENS of people walked off of a six-storey building on Sunday.
Fortunately, they were wearing ropes and harnesses in a charity challenge in aid of Homestart CHAMS (Crawley Horsham and Mid Sussex).
A large number of the 45 people who completed the abseil overcame a fear of heights to walk backwards down the side of the Sofitel Hotel at Gatwick's North Terminal.
Aimee Wiggins, fundraising manager for the charity which supports families dealing with a range of domestic problems, was among those who had to shake off vertigo.
She said: "I don't really like heights at all, so I was absolutely terrified.
"The company that does it - Over The Edge - a lot of them were in the services and have got involved in this afterwards. They make you feel really safe even though you are putting your life in their hands."
Maria Box from Pound Hill, who receives help from a Homestart volunteer to help her cope with looking after her autistic son, Ryan, also took part.
She had to force herself to move after freezing at the vital moment.
She said: "I had no nerves beforehand at all. I'd even been up there to do a recce a couple of weeks earlier and in the morning I was fine. I got my harness on and stood on the roof and they said 'Right Maria, you're first'. I really struggled to get my foot off the platform. I didn't feel frightened but for some reason I couldn't do it. Then I saw our friend Lee Cook, who is absolutely petrified of heights, next to me. He was grey but he just did it so I thought, 'If you can do it, I can do it'.
"It was amazing. I would recommend it to anyone and Homestart have done so much to help me, it was amazing to be able to do something for them."
It costs £1,500 to train a new volunteer.
The amount raised has already passed £5,000 but there are still a lot of donations to collect and it is hoped that the target of £8,000 will be met.
Ms Wiggins added: "We have the demand for our services, we now have the people, we just need the funding to carry on training new volunteers and this will help." Reported by This is 1 day ago.
