Brazilian law firm Angélico Advogadosext welcomed the New Year with big news - the hiring of attorney José Maria Junqueira Sampaio Meirelles.

São Paulo, Brazil (PRWEB) January 15, 2013

José Maria Junqueira Sampaio Meirelles joins Angélico Advogados after six years as a partner at Leite Tosto e Barros Advogados Associados.ext His practice focuses on advising domestic and foreign clients on corporate law, international contracts and tax law. As former general counsel for multinational companies such as Sharp Electronics Group, AES-Eletropaulo and GTECH Corporation in Brazil, as well as in-house counsel for Cargill in Brazil, Meirelles understands the legal and business concerns of corporate clients. Meirelles was also formerly a tax judge for the São Paulo State Taxes and Assessments Tribunal and served as president of the mediation and arbitration committee of the Brazilian Bar Association. He has a law degree from Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo in Brazil, a post-graduate degree in tax law from the Centro de Estudos de Extensão Universitária in Brazil and a Master of Laws (LLM) from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign in the United States.

The news of Meirelles’ arrival comes as Angélico Advogados continues to expand its international practice. Last year, former Greenberg Traurigext attorney Greg Barnett initiated the firm’s efforts to assist non-Brazilian clients with their business and legal needs. Recognizing a lack of services for foreign investors in Brazil, Barnett set out to help. “Foreign investors are doing more and more business in Brazil and they have limited options for experienced legal counsel,” says Barnett. “Our firm offers clients the comfort of working with a small, client-focused law firm that is familiar with the challenges of doing business abroad.”

For the past year, Angélico Advogados offered the services of a boutique Brazilian law firm with the guidance of an American attorney experienced in Latin American business transactions. Now, with the addition of Meirelles, the firm builds on its practice by including a Brazilian lawyer experienced with US law and international business contracts. “I can’t think of a better person to help grow our practice,” said Barnett of Meirelles. “Clients now get the best of both worlds: an American lawyer with experience in Brazil and a Brazilian lawyer with experience in the United States.” In addition to his US law degree, Meirelles spent time as an international associate with US law firm McDermott Will & Emery in Chicago, Illinois.

About Angélico Advogados

Angélico Advogados is a São Paulo based Brazilian law firm that advises both domestic and international clients on legal matters in Brazil. Lynn-Ann Gries: How Women Entrepreneurs Succeed in the Midwest

$
0
0
Lately, it seems like women tech entrepreneurs and their companies have a higher profile than ever. Yahoo hiring new President and CEO Marissa Mayer away from Googleext was consistently one of 2012's top news stories. Avis recently acquired Zipcarext, the short-term car rental business co-founded by Robin Chase, for $491 million, while Google snapped up social media marketing software provider Wildfireext, co-founded by Victoria Ransom. Companies founded by women -- everything from online ticketing service EventBrite to women-geared financial planning platform LearnVest -- are infiltrating (if not dominating at times) tech lists. Check out Mashable's "44 Female Founders Every Entrepreneur Should Know."ext

According to a June 2012 Forbes articleext, "Women have been starting businesses at a higher rate than men for the last 20 years and . . . will create over half of the 9.72 million new small business jobs expected to be created by 2018." The increasing success of high growth tech companies such as TaskRabbitext (an app/website to hire reliable people for odd jobs) and Lockerzext (online photo sharing/e-commerce) -- and as the fact that in 2009, "17 of 19 high-tech IPOs had at least one female officer"ext -- takes these overall positive trends in female small business ownership to the next level.

Don't get me wrong, this group still face many hurdlesext: a disproportionate lack of capital, a dearth of women starting scalable companies and still, relatively few women in leadership positions. Still, if the increasing pool of strong female founders I'm seeing here in the Midwest is any indication, there's cause to feel optimistic about the ability of women to be even bigger players in high growth entrepreneurship in the not-so-distant future -- and it's a byproduct of several things.

· *Networking Opportunities*
In many Midwest cities, women entrepreneurs have recognized the value in working together to share information and tips, and offer support and advice. Four St. Louis women, seeing a dearth of female entrepreneurs at networking events, recently banded together to create a new business networking group, Women Entrepreneurs of St. Louis (WEST)ext. In the Cleveland area, Laura Bennett, the CEO and Founder of Embrace Pet Insuranceext, formed a mentoring community for female entrepreneurs leading high-growth-potential companies, called the Burning River Coffee Communityext. "I feel there is a place for a community to mentor women to build our numbers," Bennett says. "Women are no less driven, focused and capable of running high growth companies than men; there just aren't many examples to look to. The BRCC is another way to encourage and support women in building these companies."

· *Women-Geared Financial Support And Resources*
Funding continues to be one of the biggest hurdles for female entrepreneurs -- in 2009, of the 21 percent who pursued angel capital, only 9.4 percent were successfulext -- despite the fact that, as the Harvard Business Review notesext, "women entrepreneurs bring in 20 percent more revenue with 50 percent less money invested." To help bridge that gap, the nonprofit Springboard Enterprisesext offers women-specific programs and resources- including accelerators, education sessions and venture forums -- in many cities, with the goal of fostering women entrepreneurship and helping these innovators attract capital.

"[Participating in Springboard's LifeScience Venture Forums] was a terrific opportunity for me to network with female entrepreneurs, both first time CEOs and more experienced CEOs," says Maria Bennett, CEO of SPR Therapeutics, a Cleveland-based medical device company that recently raised $5 million in Series A financingext to commercialize pain therapies based on its nerve stimulation technology. "Now it's a family. I'm able to reach out to the members of Springboard -- whether they're alums of Springboard or they're actually people that are working there -- and they offer different opportunities to me, whether it's fundraising or getting in touch with others."

There's also Ohio-based organizations such as Bad Girl Venturesext -- a non-profit offering classes, networking opportunities and low-interest loans to female entrepreneurs in Cleveland and Cincinnati -- and the woman-started (and -friendly) SoMoLendext, a locally-focused investment portal for small businesses, help fund the state's most promising women. Women helping other women creates quite an impressive domino effect: That same HBR piece cites a Kauffman Foundation studyext which observed "70 percent of women venture capitalists were in partnerships that had closed deals with women-led companies."

· *Patience*
The Midwest's startup ecosystem is in the midst of a slow-but-steady growth that should result in a big payoff down the line. In a similar sense, the same is true for women tech entrepreneurs. Proportionately, they have a lot farther to go to catch up with men in the startup space: As Fortune noted last summerext, "Though women hold over one-third of the jobs in the tech space, less than 10 percent of venture-backed companies have women co-founders." The more women network and cooperate, the more a critical mass forms. It won't happen overnight, of course, but give it time and progress will happen.

· *Plenty of Role Models*
When Cleveland entrepreneur Lindsay Sims -- a recent recipient of a $25,000 Bad Girl Ventures loan -- decided to start her socially integrated leasing company, Renter's BOOMext, she approached Embrace Pet Insurance's Laura Bennett for advice. The reason? Bennett's reputation preceded her. "I'd heard about her and Embrace Pet Insurance," says Lindsay. "At the time, I was toying with the idea of starting a business and I was impressed at the fact that a woman was making such a huge splash in the Cleveland funding community."

Northeast Ohio's health care community as well has plenty of established women entrepreneurs in charge in addition to Maria Bennett. One of the more notable faces is Dr. Charu Ramanathan, Founder & Chief Scientific Officer of CardioInsight, the developer of non-invasive electrocardiographic mapping technology, which closed a $7.5 million Series C financing round last year. Regardless of sector, as more high-profile women attract capital and become successful, they inspire more women to take the entrepreneurship leap and follow in their footsteps.

It's important to remember, however, that the goal of any of these initiatives is not to create startup communities with women in one silo and men in another. Instead, doing women-specific outreach and forming women-only programs is done with the idea of giving them the tools they need to become integrated into the community. Creating a diverse entrepreneurial ecosystem is the most effective way to enact positive change in a community -- and it only makes sense that women should be at the forefront of any development efforts. *The Shape of Design by Frank Chimero*
Designers and design fans will immediately recognize Frank Chimero's name from his presentations and videos on the design conference circuit. Over the years, he's honed his skills addressing this topic, and in 2012 he turned all of those disparate ideas into one complete published work. The concise 125-page book was funded by a Kickstarter campaign and has followed up with online and social buzz that's helped its popularity. Readers have marveled at how Chimero addresses not just the "Hows," but also the "Whys" of design. "After reading the book, I want you to look at what you do in a whole new light. Design is more than working for clients,"Chimero saysext on the book's website.

*Mastermind: How to Think Like Sherlock Holmes by Maria Konnikova*
Maria Konnikova offers one of the year's most-hyped books that capitalizes on the modern affinity for the famed, fictional British detective. Rather than focus on Holmes' detective and deduction skills, Konnikova presents reasoning methods that the average person can replicate to become a more effective thinker. "Most of us have a tendency to make instant, crass judgments like that fool Watson,"said a Guardian book reviewerext. But with a little investigation of our own into the psychology and methods that made Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's protagonist so masterful, we can all uncover something new. Elementary, dear readers.

*Logo Life: Life Histories of 100 Famous Logos by Ron van der Vlugt*
You might recognize these logos, but did you ever consider where they came from? Ron van der Vlugt looks into the development and evolution of famous symbols for brands like Apple, Nike, and Coca-Cola. Unlock the mysteries behind these legendary logos and learn about the history of how designers matched the identities of some of the world's most famous companies with emotions they hoped to project through their symbols. That's not all, though: Van der Vlugt includes a glimpse into how early versions of these logos looked so you can get an impression of how history could have gone differently.

*The Functional Art: An Introduction to Information Graphics and Visualization (Voices That Matter) by Alberto Cairo*
For those who are confounded by the flood of information and raw data about our world that seem to bombard us these days, Alberto Cairo comes to the rescue with a new approach to make sense of it all. By turning this information into more digestible stories, you'll discover how to tackle the problem of a big data set. Charts and diagrams are clearly here to stay -- it's time to get comfortable with how to view them and get the most out of them. On top of that, designers and journalists who specialize in chart creation outline how to most creatively and effectively communicate information. The book also comes with a DVD containing video lessons that expand on core concepts so you can put the lessons to work right away.

*Building Stories by Chris Ware*
Sometimes you just have to build something differently, and that's what Chris Ware did here. His book is more aptly describable as an "oversized box containing 14 related but free-standing comics, in a variety of shapes and styles,"as a Los Angeles Times reviewer put itext. It's a choose-your-own-adventure style book that allows the reader to "build" the story as he or she goes. It took Ware over a decade to create this ambitious graphic novel, which is bound to be a discussion piece on anyone's coffee table. The stories buried inside the book are full of despair and disappointment, but it's the external innovation that speaks loudest. Like most great works of art, it's something you have to see for yourself.

Sharapova flawless again; Radwanska wins 11th straight

MELBOURNE, Australia -- For someone with precious little match "toughness" heading into the Australian Open, Maria Sharapova didn't look overly concerned Wednesday.

The second-seeded Russian beat Japan's Misaki Doi 6-0, 6-0 in just 47 minutes, her second consecutive match at Melbourne Park in which her opponent failed to win a game. Doi won only 15 points.

Sharapova, last year's Australian Open runner-up, pulled out of the Brisbane International with a right collarbone injury two weeks ago and had not played a competitive match this year until her 6-0, 6-0 win over fellow Russian Olga Puchkova in the first round Monday.

She is the first woman to post consecutive "double bagels" at a Grand Slam tournament since Wendy Turnbull at the Australian Open in 1985.

"I've been playing really aggressive and doing the right things," Sharapova said. "It's not easy to be up so much because you can have a few letdowns. You just have to try to concentrate. My job is to make it as easy as possible."

Sharapova might find the competition tougher in the next round, where she'll met seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams on Friday. The older Williams sister beat Alize Cornet 6-3, 6-3 in the first night match Wednesday on Rod Laver Arena, taking advantage of the French player's double-fault to end the first set.

"Tennis ... is about winning when it's not your best day," said the 25th-seeded Williams. Next up "I'm playing against Maria. I'm going to have to be at my best against her."

Top-seeded and defending champion Novak Djokovic was scheduled to play American Ryan Harrison in the late match.

The final match of Wednesday's session on the center court was disappointing, though not wholly unexpected, for the home crowd and Australia's top-ranked female player.

Ninth-seeded Samantha Stosur, who has spoken of her anxiety over playing in front of her home fans, served twice for the match but double-faulted on match point in a 6-4, 1-6, 7-5 loss to China's Zheng Jie.

"It was a bit of a choke," Stosur admitted. "Obviously it's a hard one to take when you get yourself into a winning position and you lose five games straight."

Stosur, who had nine double-faults and 56 unforced errors, has never gone beyond the fourth round at her home Grand Slam, lost in the first round last year and also lost in her first matches at warm-up tournaments this year in Brisbane and Sydney.

"I needed to keep fighting and enjoy the match," Zheng said. "It's amazing I came back."

Earlier, fourth-seeded Agnieszka Radwanksa extended the year's best winning streak to 11 matches. She eased into the third round with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Romania's Irina-Camelia Begu and remains unbeaten this year, including titles at warm-up tournaments this month at Auckland and Sydney.

"I can play even better," said Radwanska, who lost last year's Wimbledon final to Serena Williams. "I didn't really expect I could win that many matches in a row, and hopefully I can keep going."

Her last two trips to the Australian Open have ended in quarterfinal losses to the eventual champion -- Kim Clijsters in 2011 and Victoria Azarenka last year.

With top-ranked Azarenka and Serena Williams on the other half of the draw, Radwanska's main obstacles to reaching the final are 2011 French Open champion Li Na, who beat Olga Goortsova of Belarus 6-2, 7-5 to reach the third round, and potential semifinal rivals Sharapova or No. 5 Angelique Kerber, who advanced with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Lucie Hradecka.

Williams hurt her ankle in her opening victory on Tuesday, putting her bid for a third consecutive major title in jeopardy. She has only lost one match since her first-round exit at the French Open last year. Williams canceled an outdoor practice session and moved it indoors.

In other women's second-round matches: No. 11 Marion Bartoli beat Serbian qualifier Vesna Dolonc 7-5, 6-0; No. 13 Ana Ivanovic had a 7-5, 1-6, 6-4 win over Taiwanese qualifier Chan Yung-jan; No. 18 Julia Gorges beat Romina Oprandi 6-3, 6-2; No. 22 Jelena Jankovic, a former world No. 1, beat qualifier Maria Joao Koehler 2-6, 7-6 (5), 6-2; and 17-year-old American wild-card Madison Keys beat No. 30 Tamira Paszek of Austria 6-2, 6-1.

Russian qualifier Valeria Savinykh upset No. 15 Dominika Cibulkova 7-6 (6), 6-4 and Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium beat No. 23 Klara Zakopalova 6-1, 6-0.

On the men's side, No. 4-ranked David Ferrer needed five match points before clinching a 6-0, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 win over American Tim Smyczek, who got into the main draw as a lucky loser from qualifying.

Fifth-seeded Tomas Berdych beat Guillaume Rufin of France 6-2, 6-2, 6-4, and No. 10 Nicolas Almagro and No. 16-ranked Kei Nishikori also moved on. No. 24 Jerzy Janowicz of Poland rallied from two sets down to overpower India's Somdev Devvarman 6-7 (10), 3-6, 6-1, 6-0, 7-5.

Also advancing were No. 28 Marcos Baghdatis, the 2006 Australian Open runner-up, No. 31 Rad Stepanek and No. 32 Julien Benneteau.

No. 20 Sam Querrey advanced when fellow American Brian Baker retired in the second set with a right knee injury and next plays No. 15 Stanislas Wawrinka.

Baker, who returned to the tour last year after missing almost six seasons with a variety of injuries, won a first-set tiebreaker and was level at 1-1 on serve in the second. He was later pushed from Court 6 in a wheelchair.

Tournament organizers said that Baker had a torn meniscus and is expected to be out about four months.

"Yeah, he's the last person that deserves anything like that with his five or six surgeries already," Querrey said. Reported by TENNIS.com 2 hours ago.

Cuban-born, New York-based musician, artist and performer, Maria Bacardi, announces the release of her debut album of traditional Cuban ballads entitled, Deseo available March 2013 worldwide through Breaking Records. A release party and two performances by Maria Bacardi and the musicians recorded on the album will be held at 8pm and 10pm on March 21, 2013 at The Kitano in New York City at 66 Park Ave. The illustrious event will be attended by many members of the Bacardi family as well as Maria’s extensive community of celebrated actors, actresses, musicians and artists. For ticket info or to RSVP, contact Lainya Magana: lainya@aopublic.com

Deseo, which translates to Desire in English, is a collection of traditional ballads of love and longing performed in the Cuban Bolero style and sung in Spanish, French and English. Born in Cuba in 1957, Maria Bacardi was raised in Europe and given an “A-patrida” (no country) passport when she and her family were forced to flee the country when Fidel Castro nationalized all private businesses. Maria Bacardi’s great-grandfather was the founder of the successful Bacardi rum company, which was deeply embedded in the socio-political and economic fabric of the nation since its inception in 1860. This special selection of tracks featured on Deseo were chosen by Maria Bacardi, as they are the songs her mother sang to her while exiled in Spain.

"My art and music are both fed from my desire for looking for the truth in beauty, despite the forces of pain and grief." - Maria Bacardi

Maria Bacardi honors her personal Cuban history by treating the traditional scores on Deseo with the intended notes. The musical arrangements for Deseo are by David Oquendo and Carlos Gomez. Maria Bacardi’s singing is accompanied by Cuban and Latin American musical luminaries including David Oquendo, guitar; Vicente Sanchez, percussion; Alex Hernandez, bass; Onel Mulet, saxophone and flute; Pablo Vergara, piano; Roman Diaz, percussion; Yunior Terry, bass; and Duo Carlos y Marta, guitar and vocals.

Maria Bacardi (formerly Maria Pessino) is an actress, singer, artist and poet who was born in Cuba in 1957. She left Cuba as a young child to be brought up and educated in Europe. She currently lives and works in East Hampton, New York where she has raised her family since 1990.

Maria Bacardi has been an actress and an artist her whole life and she now embarks on the path of a new creative endeavor, which takes the form of song. This venture adds to her oeuvre and marks her first professional foray into singing. Beginning with the traditional Cuban songs her mother sang while in exile in Spain, Maria Bacardi will release her first, full-length album, Deseo, which will debut in early 2013.

"I am not in Cuba. Cuba is in me." - Maria Bacardi, from forthcoming album, Deseo

Maria Bacardi is also the Founder and Artistic Director of Oddfellows Playhouse, a not-for-profit artist’s theater company, which instigates new work and uses alternative indoor and outdoor stages throughout many locations in the Hamptons.

In the past thirty years, she has played numerous roles in many theater productions in New York City and in the Hamptons including Woyzek by Georg Büchner, at BAM directed by Robert Wilson. Maria Bacardi has acted in and directed many productions of Oddfellows Playhouse including One Thousand Avant Garde Plays, by Kenneth Koch, Cote d’Azur Triangle, by Harry Kondoleon, Joan of Arc, by Uni Dahr and John Morrow, Behold and Reflect and Systole and Diastole by Maria Pessino (Maria Bacardi). She recently performed in The Lost Lesson by Joan Marie Moossy.

In addition to singing and developing theater works, Maria Bacardi constructs magic environments inside boxes -Troves-, shown in numerous galleries of the Hamptons and New York City.

Maria Bacardi is founder and honorary co-chair of the Community Board of Robert Wilson’s Watermill Center and spearheads a multitude of theatrical workshops involving the East End youth. She serves on the board of Performa.

She holds a Bachelors Degree of Arts from New York University in Drama Therapy and Psychodrama.
