Stanley Mehr Dies Patch McLean, VA --

Stanley Mehr, long-time resident of McLean and co-founder of Mehr Brothers Flowers, passed away at his home Monday, Jan. 14, following a brief illness.

Mehr was 94.

At the time of his death he was surrounded by those to whom he been closest in recent years, including his daughter Julia, and two dear friends who were also employees—Zoe Sollenberger, who had worked at Mehr Brothers for 38 years, and Tshering Tamang, who had been an employee for 25.

Mehr and his brother Seymour began farming flowers on a plot of land off Old Dominion Road in 1951, operating under the name Mehr Brothers Flowers. In those early years, Mehr was employed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, where he had a distinguished career until his retirement more than 35 years ago.

Seymour passed away from leukemia in 1957, and Stanley kept the business going, retaining the name Mehr Brothers in tribute to his beloved sibling.

For decades, Mehr resisted offers from developers to buy his four-acre parcel. In a 2011 profile in the Fairfax Times, he questioned the wisdom of selling, even though a sale would have provided substantial earnings. “Sit in an apartment in a high rise?” he stated rhetorically, referring to his deep love of land far beyond any need for material wealth.

Mehr was one of McLean’s more engaging and even enigmatic characters. Many of his customers became close friends, and he returned the friendships with affection, concern and empathy.

Frequently they stopped by Mehr Brothers, or Stanley would go to their houses, simply to discuss current events, engage in political debates, or share a laugh. Customers—and particularly his customers’ children—enjoyed all the chickens, ducks and pigeons that resided on his property. He never invested in cable television because, as he had stated, he never had enough time to read, let alone watch TV. He was known for his passion for knowledge and his penchant for questioning the world around him. It was often said that no visitor came up his dirt driveway without being asked about their pastimes, pursuits and livelihoods.

Stan was the first born of Joseph and Celia Mehr, Jewish immigrants who raised their children in Coney Island, NY. It was a busy household with five children—in addition to Seymour, there were three sisters, Rosalind, Gloria and Rhoda—but Stanley made time to grow plants and raise pigeons on rooftops. This was one hobby put to good use when he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving overseas in the Army Pigeon Corp during World War II. During his military service in Austria, he met his future wife Maria and brought her home to the U.S. Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Mehr enjoyed a 65-year marriage, until Maria’s death in 2010.

After receiving a degree in agriculture from the University of Wisconsin, he worked for the soil conservation service, teaching farmers and young men from the civilian conservation corps about contour farming and other erosion control practices. Just before he joined the army, he volunteered with numerous other young people to help harvest crops as many farmers and farm workers had been called to serve in the war. After the war he helped with the agricultural reconstruction of Europe.

Stanley Mehr is survived by his daughter Julia Mehr, and his sisters Rosalind Krupp of Maplewood, NJ and Rhoda Young of Springfield, VA.

For those who wish to make a memoriam donation, the family suggests the American Farmland Trust, an organization that Mr. Mehr supported throughout his life. A memorial service is being planned for this spring.

The National Fund for Workforce Solutions: CareerEdge Uses Sector-Based Approach to Close Florida's Skills Gap

$

As a single mother and soon-to-be, first-time grandmother, Maria desperately needed to find work. Unfortunately, she'd been out of the workforce so long, her skills were no longer applicable to the marketplace.

Fortunately, Maria heard about CareerEdge, a non-profit, public-private partnership serving the Manatee-Sarasota region of Florida. Through the training we provide, individuals can get the help they need for a new start in life. In two years, we've been able to impact the lives of more than 1,775 individuals with needed training. In addition, we've helped secure employment for more than 290 members of our community.

CareerEdge got its start as the 24th "regional collaborative" site of the National Fund for Workforce Solutions in 2010. Through the funding and support of the National Fund, we've been able to work with local decision-makers - including employers, educational partners and community-based organizations - to identify and develop training pathways in industry sectors most promising to meet local needs.

For the Manatee-Sarasota area, two of these growth sectors where we concentrate our efforts include healthcare, which we entered into in our first year and manufacturing, which we introduced this year. This training not only helps close the local skills gap, but most importantly, provides a pathway to well-paying jobs for low-skilled workers who are trying hard to get ahead in life and provide for their families.

In Maria's case, that meant going through our job-readiness program in manufacturing and then onto training toward a certificate offered by the Manufacturing Skills Society Council. But the help didn't stop there: we also found Maria employment with a local manufacturer.

As a result, by the time her granddaughter was born, Maria had regained the skills needed to be competitive in the workforce and obtained employment with benefits. This gave her the confidence she had lacked to continue on with her education and pursue her GED, which CareerEdge was able to help cover by way of funding through the National Fund.

Maria is just one example of the many lives impacted through this sector-based approach. Most job seekers who become participants in our programs are unemployed, on welfare or on other means of social support. They are typically single parents unable to obtain employment due to a lack of skills, and the need for child care and funds necessary to obtain any kind of job readiness or credentialed training.

As another real-life example, Cassie found CareerEdge through HOPE Family Services Domestic Violence shelter. Through their encouragement, she successfully completed a CareerEdge training program and is now employed at a local distribution center, Bealls, Inc. Since coming to CareerEdge for help, Cassie now lives in her own home and her children are being well taken care of. She is successfully employed and continuing her education both on the job and outside of it.

Maria and Cassie's stories are just two of many. Our goal is to get as many such individuals as possible back into the workforce, earning sustainable wages and set on successful career paths. The work accomplished by CareerEdge enables us to make lives transform and strengthens our community bonds and economic development. The funding received from the National Fund enables the success of CareerEdge to be possible. To support more programs like ours, consider donating to the National Fund for Workforce Solutions through the JobRaising Challenge, being sponsored by The Huffington Post and the Skoll Foundation. Police Logs: Driver Plows into Trees, Then Ditches Car Patch East Hampton, NY --

The following information was supplied by the East Hampton Town Police Department. A criminal charge is only an accusation and does not indicate guilt.

• After he allegedly hit trees on Bull Path in East Hampton on Monday and fled the scene, Michael P. McDowell, 69, was arrested on a misdemeanor driving while intoxicated charge. Police said they received a call about a vehicle in the roadway at about 12:20 a.m.

When an officer arrived, they found a 2007 Hyundai had struck numerous trees and the driver had ditched the car. The car received "severe front end and driver's side damage," an accident report said.

A check with the State Department of Motor Vehicles showed the car belonged to McDowell, who lives near the accident scene. Police said they found him at his house and he appeared drunk.

An East Hampton Village Volunteer Ambulance responded and took him to Southampton Hospital due to facial injuries. He refused medical attention and was released into police custody. He was held overnight at police headquarters and arraigned in East Hampton Justice Court on Monday. He was released on his own recognizance.

*Domestic Incident*

• Jose B. Maria, 24, of East Hampton, is being held at the Suffolk County jail in Riverside in lieu of $15,000 cash or $150,000 bond after a domestic incident on Feb. 12. According to police, Maria allegedly punched an unidentified woman, who, they said, had a contusion and noticeable swelling on the left side of her face. Maria returned to the woman's house after police arrived, and he was taken into custody at about 6 p.m. He was charged with acting in a manner injurius to a child under 17, a misdemeanor, (there was a child present during the alleged altercation), and harassment in the second-degree, a violation. East Hampton Town Justice Catherine A. Cahill set the bail at his arraignment the following day.

*DWIs*

• Angel A. Farez-Chimbo, 22, of East Hampton, was arrested on a drunken driving charge on Feb. 14 at about 1:10 a.m. Police said he was driving a 1998 Saturn when he crossed over the double yellow line on North Main Street in East Hampton. Police activated their headlights as Farez-Chimbo entered the village, but he continued west on Main Street. He eventually pulled over on Buell Lane. He was arrested on a DWI charge at 1:30 p.m. Held until arraignment, he was released on $250 bail.

• Page H. Raebeck, 44, of Springs, was arrested on a DWI charge on Feb. 16 in East Hampton. Police pulled her over on North Main Street in a Subaru that had a headlight out at about 12:40 a.m. She appeared intoxicated and performed poorly on field sobriety tests, police said. Justice Rana released her on $350 bail later that morning. Reported by Patch 6 hours ago.

Eastleigh byelection: Boris Johnson given the doorstep brush-off

$
0
0
'Oh my God. No, no thank you', the mayor of London was told by one householder as he campaigned in the constituency

The mid-afternoon tranquillity of suburban Stamford Way was broken on Wednesday when startled voters opened their doors to find a familiar blond on the step and a phalanx of Fleet Street snappers at the garden gate. Yes, Boris Johnson had been summoned to help rescue his party's flagging campaign in the Eastleigh byelection and shore up David Cameron's premiership.

All things considered, most voters take it well, as if ET or Rhianna was in the habit of dropping in for a cuppa every Wednesday. No sooner has the mayor of London pronounced "no one home" after lightly pressing one bell than the householder appears.

Voter: "Oh my God [pause]. No, no thank you," as if Boris was selling brushes.

Mr Mayor is not easily discouraged. "A very good candidate," he says, gesturing at Maria Hutchings as if she were a sample brush. After a brief exchange, Johnson and the Tory candidate retreat. "It's going very well," he says, which is Boris-speak for "no it isn't".

Whether he is the right man to transform the Hutchings campaign is debatable. He is a metropolitan posh boy; she is a working-class mum, an immigrant to south Hampshire from Essex and proud of it. Though both are gaffe-prone, Eurosceptic populists, quietly scornful of Cameron's patrician reserve, Hutchings's fiery brand makes Johnson's sound quite thoughtful.

Clever, ruthless and ambitious, he probably has more in common with Chris Huhne, whose character flaws have caused next Thursday's ballot. Little wonder that the major candidates – there are 15 in all – do not actively exploit the former MP's disgrace. Their brand is tainted, too.

On the face of it, Huhne's guilty plea last month on a charge of perverting the course of justice over a 2003 speeding case ought to have killed the Liberal Democrats' hopes of holding the seat. But the party is well dug-in and well-organised here, holding 40 of the 44 council seats.

One of their own, wholesome council veteran, Mike Thornton, is their "Mr Normal" candidate. Unlike Huhne, he has no visible ambition other than seeking better jobs, houses and schools and lower taxes for the people of Stamford Way in Fox Oak, a suburbanised village on the eastern flank of Eastleigh. In picking a novice, the writer and humourist John O'Farrell, to be its candidate, Labour appears to be saying implicitly that it hopes that his charm and TV-recognition status will protect its 9.6% share of the vote in 2010 – even enhance it.

"I think we can win," O'Farrell unconvincingly assures reporters after parading two volunteers dressed as jockeys, one in red, one in blue and yellow, for the television crews. The idea is to mock his rivals' claim that this is a two-horse race between the Lib Dems and Tories: they are the same horse, says Labour.

In truth, this is a Lib-Con scrap which Labour can afford to sit out and quietly enjoy. But tactical voting and turnout, twin horses of byelection disaster, will decide the outcome.

In Diane James (articulate and smartly dressed, she looks more the Tory candidate than Hutchings), Ukip has a sharp candidate and an upbeat mood in its campaign HQ on the high street. James parades two Lib Dem defectors, fed up with coalition "lies" and Huhne, and claims to be winning votes from all sides.

Hutchings lost by 3,864 to Huhne in 2010 and needs a 3.7% swing to win next week. Her embarrassingly noisy support for leaving the EU has not immunised her against defections, which are easily found, even in mainly prosperous Eastleigh where Poundland's customers are matched by those at the Costa cafe.

Among lunchtime shoppers outside Sainsbury's, the mood is uncertain. "I was Lib Dem, but may switch,'' says one voter.

Prevailing theory is that defeat would be a disaster for either Nick Clegg or David Cameron or (either way) for the coalition. This could be a coalition-breaker, say excited pundits. It does not feel that way. Clegg has an alibi for defeat (Huhne) while Cameron can remind his critics that, if Hutchings loses, it shows that her rightwing soundbites – immigration, abortion (a 10-week limit?), police ink guns to brand rioters and Euroscepticism – are not the path to victory in 2015. She may be more trouble to him if she wins, the first such Tory mid-term gain in office since 1982.As for Boris Johnson's message to reporters on the Waterloo train is that it is "the constitutional duty of every Tory to go to Eastleigh and kick the Lib Dems in the … oh no, they haven't got any".

In Stamford Way, he repeatedly attacks Clegg as a nonentity whose only claim to fame is his U-turn over student tuition fees – " a protoplasmic, amoebic, vacillating, jelly of indecision". To suggestions that Hutchings is a loose cannon whose London minders (more evident on the doorstep than local activists) keep her firmly under control, he insists she is a "strong original, local voice". But his endorsement falls well short of enthusiastic – as it does for Cameron and his "strong, credible plan for the country".

Among adults, the metropolitan Johnson magic does patchy business outside his comfort zone. Despite her tracksuit top with 'MARIA HUTCHINGS' on the back, even the candidate gives off the sense that Thornton's "Mr Normal" pitch may see the Lib Dem safely elected despite everything. " I will try my best, that's all we can do," she explains. After 30 minutes or so, Johnson gets into his white Mercedes van with the black tinted glass and is beamed back to London and peace again descends on Stamford Way . Has anyone seen Maria Hutchings? Lib Dems go on the attack

Tories accused of hiding Eastleigh by-election candidate after she stays away from Radio 5 Live debate.

As someone who first came to public attention berating Tony Blair live on national TV, one might assume that Maria Hutchings would never run shy of publicity. But when Radio 5 Live held its Eastleigh by-election debate this morning the Conservative candidate was a notable absence.

The official explanation is that Hutchings was meeting voters with Welsh Secretary David Jones, recently in the headlines for suggesting that gay couples could not provide "a warm and safe environment for the upbringing of children". But it's more likely that the Tories simply didn't want Hutchings anywhere near a microphone (Eastleigh Lib Dems have responded with the "missing" poster below).

Having provoked a long-running row after she suggested that it would be "impossible" for her son to become a surgeon if he went to a state school, the candidate has become a liability. To some of us, this comes as no surprise. The day after Hutchings was selected, I wrote that she was "exactly the kind of political novice that the party should avoid".

With the betting markets all pointing to a Lib Dem hold (the latest odds give them a 79.37 per cent chance of victory), the Tories appear increasingly resigned to losing the seat. When they do, it will suit them to pin the blame on Hutchings.  Reported by New Statesman 17 hours ago.

Film Festival's Madison Stop Includes Artists' Talk

Film Festival's Madison Stop Includes Artists' Talk Patch Madison, NJ --

Three artists behind the new short film "Bartleby," including the artistic director of Playwrights Theatre of New Jersey, who appears in the film, will be on hand for a post-viewing talkback session when the Black Maria Film and Video Festival makes a stop at the Madison Public Library next week.

The adaptation of Herman Melville’s "Bartleby the Scrivener" is one of the films that will be shown during the festival tour stop.

The event is scheduled for 8 p.m. Friday, March 1, in the library's Chase Room. Tickets are $10 at the door.

The evening will feature some of the 50 short films and videos that were selected from over 700 entries for the festival, according to a news release from the Madison Arts and Culture Alliance, which is sponsoring the festival stop.

The annual Black Maria Film and Video Festival, an international juried competition and award tour that takes its name from Thomas Edison's film studio, has showcased "cutting edge works from independent film and videomakers" since 1981.

“The Black Maria tour is an exciting evening of film and video," said Deborah Starker of the Madison Arts and Culture Alliance. "It’s not often that we can see innovative and well-constructed short films in a community setting. The shows are balanced and excellently curated. John Columbus presents a compelling and knowledgeable narrative that places the films in context and helps us to gain an insight into the more challenging work."

"Bartleby," from South Orange filmmakers Gerard Amsellem, who directed the piece, and Richard Stephen Bell, who adapted the screenplay, has received a 2013 Director’s Citation from the Black Maria Film Festival and recently was made an "official selection” to screen at the Garden State Film Festival in April. Bell also is featured in the movie, along with Playwrights Theatre of New Jersey’s Artistic Director John Pietrowski. Amsellem, Bell, and Pietrowski will be present in Madison next Friday to talk about the film. Reported by Patch 15 hours ago.

*All-SCC Team - All of the Gymnasts named above.*

We were very happy with how things went. We came in seeded
first as the four time defending champions and we wanted to defend our
title. Kendall Jerzyk also defended her floor title to be back to back
floor SCC Champ. She won with just a half a tenth difference over
teammate and best friend Stefani Taschner. But Stefani also got a
championship of her own on bars. Stefani placed second in the AA and
Kendall 4th and they have been our strongest All Arounders all year.
They competed well overall tonight and we expected they would be among
the top competitors. I was especially proud of our first four beam
competitors tonight - Maria Iennaco, Becca ANderson, Amanda Rubano and
Erin MAxwell- who all nailed their beam sets under the pressure of a
championship meet. Next up is States on Saturday and in order to do
well, beam is going to be the key. These four looked confident and
really helped boost our team score. We have a few things here and
there to clean up but we are looking pretty good going into the rest
of the post season.

We recently had our our Senior Nite and we honored our one senior, Amanda
Rubano. She competed bars and beam, placing 4th on beam and was named
to the All-SCC team. It was a great night for her and a nice way to go
out. She's been a part of an SCC Championship team all four years of
her high school career. I've also attached a picture of her with her
mom, Joanne, and dad, Matt.

Here is some information on Class M States:

http://content.ciacsports.com/gym13m.shtml

We are going in ranked second and the top 3 teams are all averaging within the same point! Wow!

Also, the individuals who have qualified to the State Open have been posted:

http://content.ciacsports.com/gym13o.shtml

They are: Stefani (AA), Kendall J. (AA), Abby (AA), Erin (V, BB, FX), Maria (FX), Amanda (BB) and Becca (BB).

We will also qualify as a team if we place among the top four teams regardless of division on Saturday. Reported by Patch 15 hours ago.

Eastleigh candidate's hustings pullout sparks Cameron row with BBC

PM fends off claims that the Tory party is hiding its candidate, Maria Hutchings, away because she is a 'loose cannon'

The prime minister has become embroiled in a row over the non-appearance of his party's Eastleigh byelection candidate at a hustings and has had to deny she is being hidden away because she is a "loose cannon".

Maria Hutchings was pilloried by rival candidates and audience members when she pulled out of a BBC radio hustings on Thursday morning.

Critics claimed the Tories were trying to hide away a candidate who has become a liability after making headlines for controversial remarks on subjects ranging from state schools to gay marriage.

The Conservatives said she could not make the hustings because she was joining the prime minister on a visit to a high-tech cable manufacturer in Eastleigh.

Asked after the factory visit why Hutchings had not been at the hustings, David Cameron said: "She was with me at a very important meeting at a business that's the sort of beating heart of Eastleigh. She's been doing hustings up and down the constituency."

A local BBC television reporter pointed out that he had been at both – and so she could have been too. Cameron told him that he must have been "late" for the factory visit and continued: "I think the BBC has behaved badly and stupidly about this from everything I've heard.

"My understanding is that we were discussing with you for ages about the timing of the hustings and the fact that Maria wanted to be with me for this meeting. Frankly never mind arguing about the form, let's look at the substance. The substance is who is the best candidate for Eastleigh. Maria is hard-working, lives locally, is a mother of four, has business experience. That's what matters. Don't get involved in a great argument about form, look at the substance."

Asked if she was being hidden away because she is a "loose cannon", Cameron said: "We're not hiding her away, she's right here."

He added: "I do think this is a totally got-up thing by the BBC. You're not the most important thing in this byelection. The candidates are."

Hutchings said: "I had the huge privilege of the prime minister visiting this company. It's incredibly important for Eastleigh. I needed to be here to prepare and speak to the people in this business."

Neither Cameron nor Hutchings would speak to the national media.

In an interview with local ITV, Cameron denied that he was making his second visit to Eastleigh because he was worried at how the byelection was going.

He said: "It's a sign of how much I back Maria and our campaign. I'm always a believer that if there's a political fight going on you throw yourself into it. We've got a great candidate, she'd do a brilliant job for the constituency. She backed my plan to get on top of the deficit, get the economy moving, reform welfare, give us a fair immigration system. She backs all those things, I want her in the House of Commons beside me voting for those things."

On the issue of the missed hustings he said: "She wanted to be with me here at this important business that employs hundreds of people, this is a complete red herring."

Hutchings said: "Hustings are important, I've done them everywhere … I might have loads of energy, I might say it how it is but I can't be in two places at one time."

The prime minister was also asked about a colourful visit by the mayor of London, Boris Johnson, on Wednesday when he said all the Lib Dems had done was make a U-turn on tuition fees and sing a song about it. Cameron said: "Boris has a brilliant way of putting things and often there's a lot of truth in what he says." But, he added: "I'm here to talk about the positive things the government is doing."

Chaired by Victoria Derbyshire for 5 Live, the disputed hustings took place at a leisure centre in the Hampshire town, beginning at 10am. The prime minister began speaking to workers at noon, though he and Hutchings did spend some time with workers before his Cameron Direct session began.

The Liberal Democrat party president, Tim Farron, led the criticism of Hutchings. He said: "She's refusing to show up to a hustings with the people she says she wants to represent, proving her claims to stay in touch are empty and worthless.

"You have to ask why the Conservative machine keeps trying to hide her away. This is a candidate who says on her leaflets that she puts local people before political ambition, yet the moment she gets to share the spotlight with her party leader all that is forgotten."

Lib Dem insiders said they had been contacted about the hustings on 13 February — so the Tories had time to make sure there was no diary clash.

The audience at the hustings in Eastleigh booed when it was announced that Hutchings would not be attending. One expressed anger that she could not be questioned over comments suggesting that state schools were not good enough for one of her "gifted" children.

The Labour candidate, John O'Farrell, scored a neat point when he said it did not matter that she wasn't there because the Tory's coalition partners, the Lib Dems, were. Reported by guardian.co.uk 13 hours ago.

Eastleigh byelection: PM denies Tories hiding away 'loose cannon' candidate

$

PM embroiled in row with BBC after Maria Hutchings pulls out of hustings, as Lib Dems say she is 'running scared' of media

The Tory byelection campaign in Eastleigh suffered a blow when the prime minister was forced to deny that the party's candidate was being hidden away because she was a "loose cannon".

David Cameron, who was in the Hampshire constituency on Thursday to show support for Maria Hutchings, also became embroiled in a row with the BBC after the candidate spent time preparing for an event with him rather than face voters at a hustings organised by the corporation.

The Lib Dems, who are defending the seat in next Thursday's vote following Chris Huhne's resignation, seized on the Tory problems, presenting 10 questions that they said had to be answered about Hutchings, who has attracted headlines for forthright – and often off-message – views about subjects ranging from state education to the EU and gay marriage.

They asked why she was "running scared" of the media and being "gagged" by Tory minders when she was out on the stump. They also demanded to know why the Tories continued to describe her as "local" when she only moved to Hampshire from Essex after she was selected to stand at the last general election.

Senior Tory figures within the constituency continue to back Hutchings. They say she is good on the doorstep and has campaigned tirelessly for constituents since arriving in Eastleigh five years ago. Cameron said: "Maria is hard-working, lives locally, is a mother of four, has business experience. That's what matters. We've got a great candidate, she'd do a brilliant job for the constituency. She backed my plan to get on top of the deficit, get the economy moving, reform welfare, give us a fair immigration system. She backs all those things, I want her in the House of Commons beside me voting for those things."

The prime minister arrived in Eastleigh on Thursday for one of his Cameron Direct sessions at a high-tech cable manufacturer. He answered questions on topics including immigration, benefits, childcare, VAT and apprenticeships.

Wrapping up the session he asked for workers to vote for Hutchings, saying: "She speaks plainly, tells it how it is, God knows we need a bit more of that at Westminster."

But in media interviews in another part of the factory he found himself on the back foot when he was asked if Hutchings was being hidden away because she is a "loose cannon". Cameron said: "We're not hiding her away, she's right here."

Hutchings had attracted criticism earlier from opponents and audience members for not attending a BBC Radio 5 Live hustings that began two hours before the Cameron Direct event earlier in the day.

Asked why Hutchings was not at the hustings, Cameron said she had been with him at the visit to the cable manufacturer. A BBC television correspondent pointed out that he had been at both – and so she could have been too.

Cameron told him: "I think the BBC has behaved badly and stupidly about this from everything I've heard. My understanding is that we were discussing with you for ages about the timing of the hustings and the fact that Maria wanted to be with me for this meeting."

He added: "I do think this is a totally got-up thing by the BBC. You're not the most important thing in this byelection. The candidates are." Cameron attracted some criticism on Twitter later from people who pointed out that, actually, the voters were the most important.

Hutchings said: "I had the huge privilege of the prime minister visiting this company. It's incredibly important for Eastleigh. I needed to be here to prepare and speak to the people in this business. I might have loads of energy, I might say it how it is, but I can't be in two places at one time."

She would not take questions.

The BBC seemed to contradict Cameron's account of long-running discussions over the hustings arrangements, saying that all four main party candidates had been asked on 13 February to take part in the debate. It had only been told on Wednesday that Hutchings could not be there.
